The official blog for Old Ironsides will now be overseen by the USS Constitution Museum.


Effective immediately, the USS Constitution Museum will be continuing the official blog for Old Ironsides during the dry dock restoration period. The blog will be a collaboration between the National Parks Service, USS Constitution, USS Constitution Museum and NHHC Detachment Boston. You may access this blog by following the link below. USS Constitution Dry Dock Progress-Testing of the New Caisson

CHARLESTOWN, Mass. (April 1, 2015) Naval History and Heritage Command
Detachment Boston commenced initial installation of the new 296 ton caisson for Dry Dock 1 in Charlestown Navy Yard in preparation for USS Constitution's dry docking May 19.

USS Constitution Dry Dock Progress-Caisson Arrival

CHARLESTOWN, Mass. (Feb. 25, 2015) Sailors assigned to USS Constitution assist with mooring a barge supporting the new caisson for dry dock 1 in Charlestown Navy Yard. This will be the third caisson ever used for the dry dock, which began operation in 1833 and will house USS Constitution for its 3-year planned restoration period scheduled to commence in spring 2015.

USS Constitution Dry Dock Progress- Dry Dock 1

Dry Dock 1 is the location for USS Constitution's three year restoration. Old Ironsides first visited this dry dock on June 24, 1833, and is currently the second oldest functioning dry dock in the United States.These de-riggings and work progress on Dry Dock 1 are in preparation for her three year dry dock restoration that is scheduled for Spring 2015 in Charlestown Navy Yard.

USS Constitution Dry Dock Progress- Striking Down the Foremast

By Jan. 20, 2015 USS Constitution's fore mast had been stroked down, with no delay arriving from the two, late month, winter storms that hit the Boston area. These de-riggings are in preparation for her three year dry dock restoration that is scheduled for Spring 2015 in Charlestown Navy Yard.

By Dec. 2, 2014 USS Constitution's topgallant masts had been removed from the fore, main, and mizzen masts. These de-riggings are in preparation for her three year dry dock restoration that is scheduled for Spring 2015 in Charlestown Navy Yard.

By Nov. 18, 2014 all of USS Constitution's yardarms had been removed from her three masts. These de-riggings are in preparation for her three year dry dock restoration that is scheduled for Spring 2015 in Charlestown Navy Yard.
